Germany's first "family fun" quality trail follows the tracks of the wildcat for approximately 6 kilometers, leading up and down hills, often along narrow footpaths and across stepping stones through a small stream, passing ten interactive stations. There, you can learn all sorts of things about this secret inhabitant of our forests.
Encountering a real wildcat in the forest is highly unlikely these days. These animals are among the last remaining wildcats in Europe and are extremely shy. Only with a great deal of luck will you catch a glimpse of one. The Wildcat Forest Experience offers insights into the habitat and the dangers these rare animals face. On the exciting trail, you'll get very close to the wildcat. Following the marked path, you'll traverse terrain that is sometimes wild and sometimes gentler, over hill and dale, encountering ten interactive stations and learning a great deal about the wildcat along the way.
Tip for kids: On the forest adventure trail, children can earn their own personal wildcat diploma by paying close attention at the ten stations. Those who guess the correct answer and enter it on the nature park's website can easily print out their diploma at home.
Come with your family or school class and experience adventurous hours in the wild cat habitat!
The WILDCAT forest experience is an initiative of the BUND Baden-Württemberg State Association, supported by the Black Forest Central/North Nature Park and the municipality Bad Herrenalb as well as the Härtwig Foundation. The path was created in cooperation with the city. Bad Herrenalb, the state-owned forestry enterprise ForstBW and the municipality of Loffenau. It is part of the BUND campaign “Habitat Networking – Networks of Life”, funded with EU funds from the LIFE+ financing program.

At the starting sign in front of the Talwiese ski lodge, we turn around 180 degrees and follow the road to the fountain at the edge of the forest. This is where the Wildcat Forest Adventure officially begins. We walk through the archway and follow the concrete footprints that we repeatedly spot on the forest floor. After about 500 meters, we turn right and follow the forest path downhill until we reach the paved road. Here, we turn left onto the paved road and follow it for about 200 meters until we spot tree stumps and a sign on the right. From here, we follow the forest path downhill, cross a gravel road, and then reach the still-young Alb River. We cross it like the wildcats do (waterproof shoes are essential!). On the other side of the Alb, we continue along the path, passing first a "massage station" and later an obstacle course. The path leads us to a gravel road. Following the gravel road, we reach the bird meadows, which we then circle. Once back in the forest, we turn right immediately and follow a path downhill. From here on, we can spot metal wildcats in the trees, so keep your eyes peeled!
The path leads us to an asphalt road, which we cross and then turn left. The trail takes us through the wooded area to the rock formation at the Knoll Bridge. We cross this bridge and follow the gravel path to the right. After about 100 meters, we turn left again onto a forest path and walk uphill. After a right-hand bend, we follow the path until we reach an asphalt road. We turn right onto this road and follow it briefly before turning left back into the woods and following the path uphill until we reach a gravel path. Here we turn right and follow this path past the Wildcat bus stop to the asphalt road, back to the starting point, which we can already see from here.
